Impact Windows Blog Post

 Hurricane Shutter Installation

Impact windows are designed to be impact-resistant—not impact-proof. Under extreme hurricane conditions, the glass can still crack or shatter. The key difference is that the laminated interlayer is designed to stay in place and help maintain the building envelope, even if the glass itself breaks.

Impact windows are designed to protect the home and its occupants, but hurricane shutters add another layer of protection by shielding the glass from debris, reducing the likelihood of costly window replacement, and making the home much more difficult to enter if a window has been damaged. After major hurricanes, security becomes a real concern, and closed shutters can be a strong deterrent to opportunistic looters.

I've worked with homeowners who originally believed their impact windows made shutters unnecessary. After discussing the cost and hassle of replacing a damaged impact window, many decided that shutters were a relatively inexpensive way to protect a much larger investment.

I explain it this way: both impact windows and hurricane shutters are engineered to meet stringent impact standards, but windows are still glass. Glass can break. In my 40 years in this industry, I've seen impact windows damaged badly enough to require replacement. By comparison, I've only seen one roll-down shutter sustain damage, and it only needed a few slats replaced.

One thing I think homeowners often misunderstand is that 'impact-resistant' doesn't mean 'unbreakable.' Impact windows are tested to withstand significant impacts, but with enough force from large debris or an extreme storm, the glass can still crack or break. That's why I tell customers to think of shutters as protection for their windows, not a replacement for them.

Hurricane Charley really shaped my thinking about hurricane protection. After the storm, I saw extensive window failures and roof damage. Once windows were broken, the wind pressure entering the home contributed to severe structural damage, including cases where sections of the roof deck were lifted from the house. Seeing that firsthand reinforced my belief that every additional layer of protection matters.

One of the most overlooked benefits of hurricane shutters has nothing to do with the storm itself—it's what happens afterward. In the days following a major hurricane, homes with broken windows can become easy targets for theft. Closed hurricane shutters create a strong physical barrier and a visible deterrent, giving homeowners added peace of mind when they may be unable to return home immediately.

After more than 40 years in the hurricane protection industry, my philosophy is simple: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Hurricane shutters aren't about replacing impact windows—they're about protecting them, protecting your home, and reducing the chance of expensive repairs after the storm has passed.
